A win does not look far away for Hopetoun after a strong performance in the Mumm Champagne Handicap (1200m) at Belmont on Saturday.

She was beaten by a neck, giving the winner three-and-a-half kilos.

A gun ride from Jason Brown had her box seating early. The two fancies in the race were in front when cornering for home.

Hopetoun, just second up this preparation, had to cross heels in the final 300m when impeded slightly for clear running.

She loomed to win the race, but was nabbed late by Luke Gold and was out bobbed by Karlakee Miss on the line.

Unfortunately, Tradesman was not able to trouble the judge in the Group 3 Belmont Sprint, he was beaten five lengths.
